The Class of 1963 and the 18 Young Men Who Changed Harvard Forever

Meet the 18: Robert Gibbs

Robert Gibbs
Born: Atlanta, GA, 1942
Prepared at: Booker T. Washington High School, Atlanta, GA

As it turned out, my education at Booker T. Washington High School was as good as, if not better in some cases, than the education that people on the East Coast got who went to private schools.

Bobby was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents hadn't gone to college, but they let him know that it was the "way out" for Blacks. He studied at Phillips Academy Andover prep school during the summers, then applied to Harvard and was accepted, where he studied economics, with particular emphasis on economics in the developing world. After Harvard, he taught African history in one of the Freedom Schools in the South, and then went on to a career in the mainstream. He has worked at a variety of companies in the fields of advertising, aerospace, and banking.
