Peddie was rigorous academically. Peddie prepared me for the drill [Harvard]. When I visited Harvard, they shuttled me off to meetings with Black faculty—some of the few. I was offended that they played my visit racially, and suspicious regarding what this indicated about the place. I never tried to hide the fact that I was Negro. I became slightly ‘more Negro’ while at Harvard.
